About me
My name is Kit England, and I’m a 27 year old professional working in Local Government. If you’re interested in my background you can check out my LinkedIn profile here. I’ve had an incredibly diverse and varied life in my short time.
Education
I’ve studied heavily, holding a 2:1 from UEA in Law (focusing on Environmental Law, Civil Liberties, Intellectual Property, and Sociology), as well as an MA with distinction from Kings College London in Environment, Politics and Globalisation. Before that, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, so I studied a broad range of things, including Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Law. However, my broader education goes much wider than that, and I’ve worked in a rainforest reserve in Ecuador, as well as interned in an international NGO in London. I’ve also written a fair chunk of music (from indie and rock to dance and brass) and played gigs in venues all over Britain (mostly pubs mind). I think all of that’s important to create you as a well-rounded person.
Work
For as long as I continue to hold my post in a time of continued staff reductions, I work as a Policy and Information Officer for Newcastle City Council, helping to shape the organisation and the region’s policies around Sustainability, Climate Change and the use of data and information in support of Policy. I’ve worked on a number of things, including Newcastle’s bid to be European Green Capital for 2014, and the council’s approach to Adaptation. I’ve got a very diverse and competent skill set to support this. If you’re interested in working with me, then get in touch to ask for my CV.
Inspirations
It might seem odd to have a section in here about inspirations, but I’ve always felt there’s something in me that goes beyond the every day routines of getting up, going to work, coming home and going to bed. That probably sounds pretentious, but if I have a day like that, I don’t feel like it’s enough. I need to come away thinking ‘I’m that bit closer’, or ‘we’ve made real progress’ or ‘I’m so proud of them’.
My desire to do better than before comes from a large number of places, not least the scenes you see around you on a daily basis, in the news, from my work in Ecuador, and the close affinity to a number of organisations that I have, like Global Volunteer Network, Amnesty International and CAFOD. The world isn’t a fair place, and people suffer every day, so every inch we make towards putting that right makes me feel better.
I’m also interested in making new connections. the most interesting and life-changing experiences come when you put two existing things together in a new way, or really innovate through seeing something differently. These things excite me and if I can bring my skills to bear on things like that to change the world for the better then that’s good.
Personal Interests
Outside of work, I play Trombone in a local Silver Band, am one of the organists at my local church, and like spending time with my wife Rebecca and our dog Homer. I also like playing guitar and singing, as well as looking at geeky stuff like apps, data and other stuff.
